Sremski Karlovci lies on the northeast slopes of Fruska Gora. In the middle Ages it was a fortified city. In September in 1521, the Turkish army led by a sultan Suleyman (Sulejman), destroyed the city which was never rebuilt again. They remained under the Turkish rule till 1688.

After numerous Turkish military successes in Europe, the Christian countries – Austria, Poland, Venice and Russia, got together and made an alliance under the name The Saint League, having for a cause pushing of the Turks to Asia for good. With the joined forces, the Turks were held up near Vienna in 1683, and in the following years the Turks had lost Budim and many parts of the territory. The peace was signed up in Karlovci in 1689. The place for holding of conferences was a hill near today`s chapel The Lady of Peace. Since the emissaries could not agree who would enter first into an improvised barrack, they built one door to each side of the camp. Besides this, in order for all to be equal, it was agreed to negotiate at a round table. This event represents the first use of a round table in diplomatic negotiations in the whole world. Not far away from this place, the Austrians built 100 years later, the Chapel of Peace as a sign of remembrance. The chapel was built in a shape of a Turkish hat, while the south door, where the Turks entered, was closed. This represents a wish that the Turks never come again to these parts of the world.
